You Feel Much Safer Now

Uh oh--looks like danger!

"To protect you and your fellow passengers, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is required by law* to inspect all checked baggage. As part of this process, some bags are opened and physically inspected. Your bag was among those selected for physical inspection

Thanks G-d it's only Wayne Jarret and Lebenden Toten.

While in the City of Piss (which henceforth shall be called the City of Clear, Odorless, Souless, Professional Aluminum and Shiny Glass Piss) a few other CD's were obtained:
John Blum Astrogeny Quartet on the Eremite label
JD Parran & Mark Deutsch OMEGATHORP: Living City on the Y'all label
and
Two mini CD's (Resistance Cruisers and Rashaya) and a larger sized (Holler) from Matt Weston.

The Boston show was a blast. A big thanks to Eric Zinman for the leg work, Glynis Lowman for the door and last-tune-cello work and the kind capitalists of Cambridge for not building a gigantic shiny blue glass and aluminum luxury condominium on top of the Lily Pad.
For a portion of the performance, the audience actually outnumbered the group. That's always a plus. There were even microphones set up with long cables running into a jaunty lap top, though no recording yet.
After Boston, Nick Skrowaczewski and I made our way to wonderful WKCR for to do a bit of recording. (Thank you Ben Young, thank you Nibs Plastic.) Rumor has it said event will one day be played on and into the analog and digital air. I'll let you all know so you all can have something to forget to listen to.

There's plenty of erudite opinions and feelings all over the internet vis a vis the 2007 Vision Festival. I saw the Dixon performance (as well as some of the rehearsals.) A Reichian contraction-and-expansion of Biblical proportions. Definitely more people in the audience than in the group for that one--and it was a big group. At the end of the performance most seemed to be standing on their feet clapping and yelling "more" and "encore." In light of this, I imagine that the majority of the "web press" (isn't that rich?) to follow will be negative, questioning Dixon's ability to play trumpet and the collective mental health of the ensemble members.
Nevertheless, It is my shallow hope that the event was documented and will at one point be made into a 'thing' (CD, MP3, subcutaneous chip) for further fetishization. It is my grandiose hope that some organization (say, a small all-girls drama academy in South West Vermont newly drenched in Merck money for example) will put up the truly micro-peanut amount of capital necessary to really really rehearse that awesome group and really really really record that awesome piece of music.

Wayne Jarrett eh? I'm always in the market for some good roots reggae.
I'm actually a bit surprised that I haven't heard more opinions on the Vision Fest from the web. I was hoping for a few more takes on the various evenings of festivities.
Welcome home, wherever it is that you call home.
The Wayne Jarrett is a winner to be sure. I had purchased a CD by the Mighty Diamonds, but was horribly disappointed by the late eighties production values. The good people at Jammyland (jammyland.com) were more than happy to exchange it.
How irie is that?
All I saw was the Dixon at said Vision festival. As mentioned, an "in and out" for the ages. Time for a carton of cigarettes and a week in bed.
Eventually I imagine the sores will begin to act up again (on everyone) and dialectic will begin to dribble forth.
Vis a vis Dixon, regardless of the method, regardless of the content, regardless of how little or how much you think of Dixon, one can't deny the instrumentation of that ensemble. When was the last time bass saxophone, contralto clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, and tuba got to co-mingle and make sound? Shouldn't that be enough to capture the attention of all kinds of musicians?

Speaking freedom and happiness, are you in Chicago? Are you going to see Dixon when he is there?
thank you for writing!
Dr. Good Times- Congrats on the successful foray into performance and keep your faithful readers apprised of the thing-like results.
I don't get to go to The Vision Festival because I live far, far away, in America. I did become delicately entangled in some speculations regarding it, despite not having been there. (small point, really...surely I can still have my opinions?)
I also got chided for scoffing at the suggestion that if David Murray had been behind Blood on the Fields, it would have been far better received by fans of the avant garde.
I do feel safe, though.

Yes, I am in Chicago and will most definitely be seeing Dixon not once but twice - once in July, and once in September at the Chicago Jazz Festival with the Exploding Star Orchestra. Looking forward to both - the only time I'd seen him before was in a duo with George Lewis at the Vision Festival Katrina benefit a couple Septembers ago.
I've already seen the Dixon art that's on display here in Chicago as part of his trip out here, as I work awfully close to the gallery where it's being displayed (read: a couple floors up in the same building).
Thanks for the Jarrett tip - I'll check it out.
PB--
Chidings and scoffings are usually the sign of something being done correctly. You know that already. Further, by now you should know that you can have your opinions, so long as they mesh seamlessly with the hegemony. Otherwise, it's chidings and scoffings for you. You know that already as well. (Why do you hate America?)
I heard a rumor that Elvis Costello walked out in the middle of Blood on the Fields when performed in NYC. That is, of course, only a rumor--there's dozens of guys (and girls) walking around who look exactly like Elvis Costello. An easy enough mistake to make, but a good rumor just the same.
Did Mr. Rollins opine about 'the new music' at all?
DM--
When did Chicago get such good Mexican food?
Do they still have the Dennis Rodman billboard on the highway?
How convenient is having a gallery that shows Dixon's art in the same building where you toil for the man?
These are all questions.
Safety first!
Hey- Rollins didn't opine about the new music, merely saying "there are two kinds of music, good and bad." That's as far as he would go. He is fast friends with David S Ware but was reluctant to express any opinion on Ware's music. He was delighted by the idea of doing a duet CD with Ware when I mentioned how much I would enjoy such a thing, as if the thought had never occurred to him. He did talk about taking advantage of having freedom and wanting to create "open spaces" for musicians to stretch out, when we touched on East Broadway Rundown.

PS- I heard a rumor that Wynton Marsalis walked out of an Elvis Costello show, walked back in, then Elvis Costello left the stage, than Branford came in, then David Murray called. Sounds like a wild night.
To answer your questions:
When did Chicago get such good Mexican food?
Chicago has a history of great migrations from the south, starting with African Americans in the early to mid 20th century, and then the large Mexican immigrations of the latter 20th century. You can't throw a rock around here without hitting a stellar burrito.
Do they still have the Dennis Rodman billboard on the highway?
Nope. We do have one of Whoopi Goldberg though.
How convenient is having a gallery that shows Dixon's art in the same building where you toil for the man?
On a scale of 1 - 10, I'd rate it an 8.5. Plus, the show on Wednesday is right next door. The only thing more convenient might be a personal concert in my living room.
I imagine that the majority of the "web press" (isn't that rich?) to follow will be negative, questioning Dixon's ability to play trumpet and the collective mental health of the ensemble members.
But then, it wasn't and didn't, did it?
Keep hope alive!
